Education and Experience
Dr. Holterman completed his undergraduate degree at Yale University, graduating cum laude with a degree in biology before earning his MD and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia with a focus in immunology (https://health.usnews.com/doctors/mark-holterman-3618). Upon graduating, he completed a residency in general surgery with the University of Virginia Health Sciences Department and a subsequent fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University of Washington’s Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Holterman specializes in pediatric and general surgery, and his research interests include innovative cancer treatments and stem cell therapies as well as regenerative medicine, obesity, and diabetes.
After receiving his Ph.D. and MD, Dr. Holterman would go on to serve as surgeon-in-chief at Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital and as an attending pediatric surgeon at Rush University Medical Center. He would additionally spend two years as a Research Associate at the Clinical Research Institute in Montreal. Dr. Holterman now splits his time between his role as professor of surgery and pediatrics with the University of Illinois College of Medicine and as CEO of Mariam Global Health, a global health industry investment, and business management firm.
